Dried gourds are hand carved by artisans in Peru.
Sanyork artisans carve and dye these unique gourd ornaments by hand without the use of power tools. Every single gourd is carved in an eco-friendly environment and observing all fair trade standards.
Due to the handcrafted nature each piece is unique and size and shape will vary, usually between 3.5" -4"
How these are made:
The mate burilado (carved gourd) is made with a tool called buril -from which its name is derived- with which the craftsman or matero makes incisions on the gourd and then it is decorated by partial fire branding on a stove made out of quinwual (a tree from the Andes) tree branches.
This technique is known as fire branding. If the gourd is painted it is decorated with ink soaked brushes.
